The Merrimack Valley Planning Commission (MVPC), working on behalf of the Merrimack Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization, and in cooperation with the Merrimack Valley Regional Transit Authority (MVRTA), has completed its transportation study of the Route I-93 Corridor in Andover and Methuen. The Final Route I-93 Corridor Traffic Study is now available for viewing on this web site. Paper copies of the document may be accessed at the Nevins Memorial Library in Methuen, Lawrence Public Library, the Andover Memorial Hall Library and at the MVPC offices.
This study, which was conducted by Vanasse Hangen Brustlin for MVPC, examines existing and projected transportation demand in the corridor and makes recommendations as to what improvements should be made to both correct existing deficiencies, in and to accommodate the projected growth in transportation demand.
Also considered in the report are the adding of a general purpose travel lane in each direction throughout the corridor, providing improved bus service in the corridor, instituting expanded commuter rail service to Methuen and possibly southern New Hampshire along the Manchester & Lawrence Branch of the B&M Railroad, and creating a High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane(s). The selected transportation alternatives are analyzed and evaluated in terms of their costs, benefits, and their transportation, environmental, social, and economic impacts.
