| In June 2003, MVPC was awarded a $400,000 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for the assessment of brownfield sites in the region. Brownfields are properties that are unused or underused, due to the actual presence, or perceived presence, of contaminants.
The purpose of the Merrimack Valley Brownfields Assessment Program is to eliminate the uncertainty surrounding selected brownfield sites in the region by identifying what, if any, contaminants are located at a site and determining the cost of cleanup through Phase I and Phase II environmental assessments. The elimination of environmental uncertainty is often the catalyst needed to spur interest from developers for the redevelopment of these sites into productive use, which is the ultimate goal of the Program.

The assessment, cleanup, and redevelopment of this formerly underutilized and partially contaminated section of the downtown has been an ongoing process for over 25 years. Now containing a wonderful mix of housing, businesses, parking, and public gathering space, final beautification touches of this tremendously successful project were completed in 2006. The ultimate goal of MVPC's Brownfields Assessment Program is to help spur similar types of employment, housing, and open space redevelopment projects throughout the region.

Program News and Documents
The Merrimack Valley Planning Commission has been awarded a second $400,000 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for the assessment of suspected petroleum and hazardous material contaminated sites in the Merrimack Valley region. The award was announced on May 12, 2006 by Congressman Martin Meehan at a developer's showcase sponsored by the Haverhill Chamber of Commerce.
The new grant program began in Fall 2006 immediately following the conclusion of MVPC's 2003-2006 $400,000 EPA Brownfields Assessment Grant program. The new grant will extend the Merrimack Valley Brownfields Assessment Program through 2009, which, to date, has produced 10 Phase I and four Phase II environmental assessment reports at 11 brownfield sites throughout the region since assessment work began in 2004.
