Ever wonder what those black tubes that sit across the road are for? The Merrimack Valley Planning Commission uses them for conducting the annual traffic counting program for the region. The traffic counting program serves numerous functions. Federal Highway Administration uses MVPC volume data as part of their formula to allocate highway funding to the states. State officials use the volume data to assist them in the development and implementation of the management systems. Local officials often use this data to gauge the effects of traffic on local roads and neighborhoods. MVPC relies on these counts to help maintain its regional traffic model (the program used to project traffic demand in the region) and to determine if the region is meeting the requirements of the Clean Air Act. And finally, private sector firms use this information to assist in making business location decisions.
The traffic counting report contains totals of the volume counts taken by MVPC for each community in the region as well as the history of traffic volume data at different locations. Each location indicates the weekday Average Daily Traffic (ADT) volumes combining both directions, and specifying which month of the year the count was taken in. This data represents the most comprehensive listing of traffic information available for Merrimack Valley communities.
